Essential oil diffusers and recipes seem to be pretty popular these days.
You can find them all over Pinterest, but it seems no-one bothers to talk about the do’s and don’ts of using an essential oil diffuser…so I thought I’d be helpful and do just that!
I’m a pretty confident user of creating and diffusing essential oils, but it wasn’t always that way.
15 years or so ago when I was given my first bottle of essential oils for those thumping, nauseating, sit-in-the-dark pain in my head, I wasn’t sure that essential oils were really that useful, or maybe they’d harm more than help.
Yep. I’ve been using essential oils for that long and yes before I began my first journey with essential oils I was a bit scared and definitely uncertain.
But today, if you’re ready to start your journey with the Young Living essential oils our family has used to great success for ‘lo these many years, I’d love to be the one to help get you going for your own success. And share with you all the information I’ve learned along the way.
Because at the start I knew nothing and had no-one around who could help. But self-starter that I am I joined a spectacular team who have two top Young Living leaders available not only for me, but for you too.
And believe me when I say this counts for a lot. A big lot!
Today I know that diffusing essential oils is a great place for beginners.
Plus it’s really easy and a wonderfully quick way to really experience the benefits that come from using a high-quality, therapeutic-grade essential oil, like the ones I use.
My plan for this article is to answer all your beginner questions for diffusing essential oils and that you are ready and willing and maybe even excited to give essential oils a whirl.
It’s one of those things that once you try it, you’ll ask yourself why you never did it before. You honestly won’t regret it.
But first, for those who aren’t certain why they’d want to bother with an Essential Oil Diffuser…
Why would I want to diffuse Essential Oils?
Well for starters they are nature’s medicine cabinet in so many ways. And by concentrating the oils of these plants, you are literally separating the most powerful healing compounds of a plant into a single oil. For example to get one single 15ml bottle of rose essential oil, it take 65 pounds of rose petals!
So it’s pretty potent stuff we have on hand. Thank you nature.
And a few of the benefits that come from diffusing various essential oils are:
- Control of appetite
- Elevating moods
- Supports healthy immune system (especially useful in those long winter months)
- Promotes good night’s sleep
- Increase of energy
- Creates relaxing atmosphere after stressful days
- Boosts focus and concentration
- Repels bugs (always a good thing in Florida!)
- Combats airborne pathogens
- Eliminates odors
How to use an Essential Oil Diffuser
Breathing in high quality essential oils is a great way to support your body, mind and even your moods and emotions.
Where can I use an Essential Oil Diffuser?
Simply put, anywhere. There are so many places they can go and where you and your family can benefit.
We use them:
At home – and seriously I’m working on having a diffuser in every room!
I’m especially in love with the Young Living Desert Mist Diffuser – you can read more about that here.
It was such a fabulous deal buying it as part of the premium starter kit – because not only did I get the Young Living discount for their kits which is approximately getting $300 worth of oils plus an $87 dollar or so diffuser all for around $160, I also got an Amazon gift card valued at $25 which made the deal even sweeter.
If you are excited enough about getting your diffuser and beginning your essential oil journey to greater wellness…I’ll give you the same sweet deal that I got!
I don’t know about you, but I love saving money!!!!
I also love diffusing in virtually every room in the house, the kitchen, living room, bedrooms, bathrooms, home office and I have friends who diffuse in nurseries and mudrooms. I probably would too, but I’m a bit beyond nurseries and living in Florida, don’t have a mudroom.
And I know of others who diffuse in their office at work. Probably a good idea to have a chat with your boss first 🙂
What shouldn’t I do with an Essential Oil Diffuser?
This is super important. Don’t overdo the oils.
One of my early experiences was following a recipe I found online, from who knows who. It looked fabulous, so I threw in a bunch of the oils turned on the diffuse, and boy was that a big mistake.
Before too long my eyes and nose started to run. And had to open all the doors and windows and make a beeline for the outside – and not being really that smart, even though I’d turned the diffuser off, I didn’t leave the doors open when I came back in, and eventually ended up with a rotten headache!
But I learned a good lesson. With essential oils, especially for beginners a little goes a long way. And I mean a really long way. And some oils just don’t mix well with others. So know your recipes well, or diffuse one oil at a time.
For beginners I’d honestly start out with just 2- 6 drops as a dilution ratio.
And for more advanced users, I usually still stick to a maximum of 10-12 drops all told. Occasionally going bigger…but only because I’m familiar with how the oils work for me.
And I know in the land of the internet you’ll find some diffuser recipes that call for even more. But use caution. These oils are so much more potent than you might think.
What are the signs I’ve overdone the essential oil diffuser ratio?
Most times, the smell of the diffuser blend will be overwhelming. Like in my case. But sadly I ignored it.
If your eyes begin to get itchy or watery or just feel plain weird it’s a sign to back off a bit.
And a nose that starts to run is another sign.
And if you have none of those, but you get a headache seemingly from no-where that’s a sign that maybe your blend is too much for your body right now.
So step back on the number of drops you use. Although truth be told this rarely happens, unless you’re a bit of a blockhead like I was, throwing drops of essential oils into the diffuser willy nilly. This is a bit of a ‘don’t do what I do, but please do what I recommend’!
So then what to do?
Ventilate the room. Open doors and windows and don’t do what I did come back inside and close them…lol. Not to smart of me, it takes a while to ventilate a room and clear the essential oil mist. Mind you I’m sure you’re a lot wiser and would know better!
Clearly turn the diffuser off.
If you liked the diffuser mix and would like to still use it, take your diffuser and pour the mix into a large glass jar and dilute it even further by adding an extra 180ml of water and mix again. You might have to do this a few times, depending on how many drops you used first time around.
Put new mix into diffuser up to fill line, turn it on and test it. Still too strong? Dilute again.
And in future, when trying a new oil, learn from my mistake and only put 1-2 drops into your diffuser to test it and see if you like it. It’s always a good thing if we can learn from the mistakes of others, right?
Here’s some advice on the ‘notes’ of essential oils and how long they ‘linger.’
Is there a time limit for diffusing essential oils?
Common thinking says it’s about 15-20 minutes a time. Though in a fairly large room I’ll keep mine on longer, or using the Young Living Desert Mist Diffuser, it allows you 3 settings, one of which is intermittent, so it’s on for a minute and off for a minute. I use that sometimes if I plan on keeping the diffuser going all day.
For instance if I’m working on a project and I want to keep my focus…I diffuse essential oils for that purpose all day, using the intermittent setting.
If you stick to the 15-20 minute rule of thumb you can turn your diffuser on 2-3 more times during the day.
Of course the room size matters when deciding how long to diffuse.
I often sit in a large open space room, running air conditioning, because…well Florida. So with this scenario I’m comfortable keeping the diffuser going for longer times.
But in smaller rooms or diffusing around young children, I would stick with the rule of thumb time.
If you are diffusing around small children make sure the room is well ventilated and only 1-2 drops of essential oil in your diffuser at a time. These Young Living essential oils work so well because they are so pure and potent.
What oils should I diffuse to begin?
For beginners or first time essential oil users, I’d start with single oils.
Or blends created by Young Living, because they know what they’re doing after some 25 years in the industry.
Oils like Lemon, Lavender or Frankincense are always good to begin with.
These oils are safe to use around children and pets and have a light, uplifting fragrance that you’re probably familiar with. Just stick with the smaller drops to see how you like them.
Talking about what oils to use, I need to take a minute to say that it’s a good thing to remember that not all oils are the same.
Many are only fragrance oils and are not therapeutic, so while you can enjoy the scent, it’s not easy to tell if they’ve been diluted with chemicals which sort of defeat the object.
Please make sure you’re buying true therapeutic quality oils.
Which is why I trust Young Living, as I say they’ve been in the business for over 25 years and control the whole process starting with organic earth, seeds in the ground, distillation process and up to the bottles showing up on my doorstep.
I feel pretty darn confident that the oils I’m getting are safe for my family. And over the years we’ve all had experiences to prove the truth of that.

Are all essential oils okay to use in a diffuser?
If a company is reputable it should come with directions on the label stating its intended use. If it can be used in a diffuser it will state Aromatic use and tell you how long to use it and how often in a day.
And even though this is super easy to understand on Young Living Essential oil bottles, I confess I need a magnifying glass to read it!
And to eliminate any more worries, every essential oil (all 11 of them) that come with the premium starter kit are safe to be diffused.
